Employment Opportunity for Women’s/Bloc Parliamentary Fellowship Program
Title: Fellowship/Intern
At the request of women members of Parliament and Parliamentary Blocs, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking to hire Fellows for its prestigious Parliamentary Fellowship Program. Selected Fellows will each be paired with either a woman Member of Parliament to serve in her Parliamentary office or with a Parliamentary Bloc. They will be expected to support the woman Member of Parliament/Bloc with constituency affairs, research, policy development, media affairs, legal review, and other parliamentary work as needed. They are required to attend a one week training program in January and be available to work at least three days per week as well as other times on a flexible basis through October 2014. A small monthly stipend is offered.
The fellow is required to work directly and report to the women MP/Bloc and NDI’s Women's Political Participation Program Manager.
Responsibilities
• Support member of Parliament/Bloc with constituency affairs by answering phone calls, responding to letters, and coordinate internal and external meetings.
• Research information and resources related to public policy, law, and draft policy documents;
• Provide regular media analysis and media strategy assistance;
• Attend Parliamentary Sessions, Committee hearings, and other meetings.
• Other parliamentary work as needed.
• Provide written/verbal translation from Arabic to English and vice versa as needed;
• Complete weekly learning plan assignments as developed by NDI.
• Attend weekly Fellows meetings at NDI.
Required Qualifications
• University Graduate, graduating after 2007, with a degree in Political Science, Law, Women/ Gender Studies, International Relations, Journalism, Diplomacy, History, or Public Administration.
• Strong interest in women’s leadership and/or parliamentary governance
• Fluency in Arabic and high proficiency in English
• Must be able to commit to a semi fixed, minimum 24 hour per week, schedule for the duration of at least 8 months. Must be able to commit to full attendance at an initial training week in January.
• No previous experience in Parliament is necessary, but a strong motivation to work with women leaders or Parliamentary groups is necessary.
